Osha First Aid Kit – What Is That?

Osha first aid kit. Hmm… is it a branded first aid kit?

Not at all. Osha stands for The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA for short), and it is a sub-agency of the US Department of Labor responsible for standards for the workforce. The goal of these standards is to ensure workplace safety.

The Osha enforces workplace safety with a team of staff inspectors who make periodic worksite checks. Fines are imposed for repeated infractions and violations of regulations.

So what is really in an Osha first aid kit? Federal OSHA Regulation Standard 1910.151.b requires "Adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available." What is in the first aid kit should be at least able to treat minor injuries that occur in the workplace. However, there was no specification on the actual first aid items.

Nevertheless, there is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) compliant first aid kit which requires a minimum fill according to standard ANSI Z308.1-1998. This requirement is not made mandatory in every state yet.

Examples of items (this is not an exhaustive list) to be included in an Osha first aid kit are:

1. Items for cleaning – prep pads and towelettes

2. Items for treating – sting relief pads (for insect bites), antacid tablets, and burn cream ointments

3. Items for protection – bandages, adhesive tape roll, and eye pads

4. Additional items – thermometer, tweezer, scissors, hot/cold gel packs, and first aid guide

As you can see, it covers quite a fair bit of the minor injuries.

First aid treatments are very simple, life-saving medical practices that can and should be provided in various situations of dire emergency. Hence, the significance of providing effective first aid in case of injury is increasing. As a result, first aid kits have become an integral part of the daily household and office setup. Having a clear idea as to how to assemble the required resources in the first aid kit is essential. Timely administration of first aid can prevent a minor injury from developing into a severe one.

There are a number of manufacturers and distributors in the present day market providing high quality first aid supplies. There are certain first aid supplies that should be contained in every kit. Sterile bandages of various shapes and sizes, antiseptic wipes to clean the injury before bandage is applied, gauze and medical tape, antibacterial ointment, painkiller such as aspirin, gloves, scissors, safety pins, and thermometer are some of the indispensable first aid supplies.

Moreover, it is also essential to keep a list of the local emergency numbers and a first aid manual along with the vital first aid supplies. Medicines, antibiotic ointments, and burn creams which have expired are not only ineffective, but these first aid supplies can also be harmful when used in an emergency condition. A constant check on the first aid supplies, once in every three to six months or at least once a year, is necessary to make sure that the first aid supplies are still effective in treating injuries.
